Allen Lebovits, Ph.D.

Dr. Lebovits is Director of Psychological Services of the Division of Integrative Pain Medicine, and Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Psychiatry at the NYU Medical Center. He was previously Co-Director of the NYU Pain Management Center. Dr. Lebovits is a psychologist, who has specialized in pain management, having received his doctoral degree from Yeshiva University.
Dr. Lebovits has utilized integrative methods, such as relaxation training, biofeedback, guided imagery, and hypnosis for over 20 years. Most of Dr. Lebovits’ publications have been on the topics of pain, including pain assessment, as well as the psychological aspects of medical illness. The overall thrust of his research endeavors has been to improve the practice of pain management and reduce the needless suffering of patients from pain. Dr. Lebovits has authored over 50 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, has edited the book “A Practical Approach to Pain Management”, and has delivered over 275 invited lectures at local, regional, and national scientific forums.
Dr. Lebovits is a Past President of the Eastern Pain Association. He is the Editor of the American Pain Society E-news and the recipient of the 2007 American Pain Society Distinguished Service Award. He was also the recipient of the 2004-2005 Mayday Pain and Society Fellowship. He has been Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on 3 NIH grants. Dr. Lebovits is on the editorial boards of Pain Medicine, the Journal of Cancer Pain and Symptom Palliation, the International Journal of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care, as well as the Journal of Clinical Psychology, and is a consultant reviewer on 6 other peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Lebovits lectures frequently on topics such as pain management, stress management, biofeedback, and hypnosis. Dr. Lebovits uses cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy as well as relaxation techniques and biofeedback to help individuals regain control over their bodies and lives.
